Julia Bell Powell
ODESSA — Julia Bell Powell, 83, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital.
Julia was born July 8, 1918, in Smithfield, Texas, to General Peterson Sr. and Sussie Burgess.
Preceding Julia in death were her husband, John Anderson Powell Sr., her father and mother, a son, Arthur Lee Powell Sr., and a grandson, Derrick Shepard.
Julia was a member of Parks Memorial Church of God in Christ in Odessa.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, 1615 E. Murphy, with W.C. Kenan officiating. Burial will follow at Ector County cemetery.
Survivors include son, John Anderson Powell Jr. of Odessa; daughters, Rose Mary Shepard and Vivian Ruth Ferguson, both of Odessa; brothers John Peterson of Odessa, Leroy Peterson and General Peterson Jr., both of Smithfield, and Lawrence Earl Peterson and Robert Peterson, both of Houston; sisters, Lois P. Davis, Gladys Peterson and Jewel McMillan, all of Washington, D.C., Lillian Peterson of Smithfield, Mildred Calvert of Austin, and Earnestine Peterson of Mansfield, Texas.
Surviving grandchildren include Gary Powell, Terry Powell, John G. Powell, Terri G. Powell, John Williams, Lejon Williams, Temesha Powell, Johnathan Powell, Booker Powell, Journey Powell, Woodie Shepard, Darrel Shepard, Patricia Shepard and Brenda Shepard, Arthur Powell Jr., Carl Powell, Leron Powell, Dustin Powell, Bertrum Powell, Arthur Powell III, Elton Powell, Barry Powell, Larry Powell, Edmond Powell, Melonie Carden and Carolyn Anderson.
Services are under the care of Martinez Funeral Home.

Alford “Al” Willard Smallwood
ODESSA — Alford “Al” Willard Smallwood, 58, of Victoria passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001.
Alford was born Oct. 5, 1942, in Winters to Archie Willard Smallwood and Stella “Muzzie” Hartley Smallwood.
He graduated from Odessa High School in 1961. He was a paint contractor in Austin and Clear Water, Fla. He recently relocated to Victoria.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Stella “Muzzie” Smallwood, and brother, Millard “Woody” Smallwood.
Al leaves behind his beloved wife, Katherine Wright Smallwood; daughters, Aly Smallwood of Victoria, Monica Harding of Land O’ Lakes, Fla., and Sonja Ayers of Austin; his father, A.W. Smallwood of Odessa; sister, Vada McCallum of Odessa; brother, Jimmy “Wimpy” Smallwood of Leander; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jerry Thorpe officiating. Services entrusted to Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Mike Moore, Don Moore, Beau Jack Hendrick, Melvin

N.A. Ford
ODESSA — In my Father’s house are many mansions. I go and prepare a place for you and there you will also be.
N.A. Ford left this world for his heavenly mansion Aug. 22, 2001.
He was born in Bogata to James Wesley Ford and Maggie Davis Ford. He was married to Allene E. Land. He and his family moved to El Paso in 1949 and then moved to Odessa in 1957. He was employed in the automotive field, belonging to several automotive organizations promoting that industry. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Odessa and was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, two sisters and granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Blair.
He is survived by his wife, Allene E. Ford; two daughters, Jerry Ford Bolling and husband Robert of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Jeannie A. Ford of El Paso; two grandsons, Clayton Ford Bryan and wife LaRie and James Blair, all of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren, Parker Elizabeth and Clayton Bryan; a sister, Edith Westbrook of Paris, Texas; and several nieces.
Memorial services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today, Aug. 25, 2001, at First Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1401 N. Sam Houston Ave., Odessa, Texas, 79761.
Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

James ‘Ben’ Swinney
ODESSA — James “Ben” Swinney, 85, of Odessa passed away Aug. 23, 2001, in Carlsbad, N.M. He was born June 30, 1916, in Smith County to Thomas and Sarah Swinney.
Ben married Daisy Irene Allen on July 14, 1943, in Houston. They moved to Odessa in 1952. He worked for Bowden Construction Co. for 30 years before retiring in 1982.
His wife and later his longtime friend, Stella Henderson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include son, James Swinney Jr. of Odessa; daughters, Sarah McCorcle of Odessa and Carolyn Kennedy of Carlsbad; a brother, T.W. Swinney of Longview; a sister, Ruby Smith of Tyler; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Clara Bates
FORT STOCKTON - Clara M. Bates, 82, of Fort Stockton, a retired sales clerk, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Fort Stockton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Bennett officiating. Burial will be at East Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Fort Stockton Funeral Home.
She was born in Claremore, Okla., and was a resident of Fort Stockton since 1957. She was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Daughters, Vicki Ratliff of Rankin, Judi Ross of Kansas City, Mo., and Pam Peterson of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister, Makeline Hargis of Wagoner, Okla.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Carol Denton
MIDLAND - Carol Renee Denton, 58, of Midland, a homemaker, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at a local hospital.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Blaine J. Bushman officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements by Ellis Funeral Home.
She was born in Blackfoot, Idaho, and was a resident of Midland since 1975. She was Mormon.
SURVIVORS: Husband, Ralph Durwood Denton of Midland; sons, Ralph Michael Denton of Kingwood and Thomas Allen Denton of Provo, Utah; daughter, Patricia Lynn McShane of Katy; brother, Daryl Keele of Blackfoot; and nine grandchildren.

John Griffith
ODESSA - John R. Griffith, 78, of Odessa, a retired employee of Sears, Roebuck and Co., died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, in Garland.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Assembly of God Church with the Revs. Gene Allen and Roger Griffith officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
He was born in Olney. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
SURVIVORS: Son, the Rev. Paul Thompson of Odessa; sisters, Dorthy Gatlin of Stephenville and Janell Rector of Brownwood; and two grandsons.

Guadalupe Sanchez Jr.
MIDLAND - Guadalupe Sanchez Jr., an infant, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Odessa Regional Hospital.
Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today at St. Ann Catholic Church with the Revs. Arturo Pestin and Ernie Sanchez officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic cemetery in Stanton. Arrangements by Stanton Memorial Funeral Home and Chapel.
He was born in Odessa.
SURVIVORS: Parents, Guadalupe and Yvette Sanchez of Stanton; sisters, Ariel Sanchez, Marisol Sanchez and Araceli Sanchez, all of Stanton; grandparents, Felipe and Belia Segura of Harlingen and Francisco and Josefa Sanchez of Stanton; and great-grandmother, Ninfa Segura of San Angelo.

STANTON - Terry Vaughn Ayco*ck, 45, of Odessa, a plumber, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at a Denton hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Downtown Church of Christ with Dan Stevens officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen cemetery. Arrangements by Gilbreath Funeral Home.
He was born in Crane.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Debra Ayco*ck of Odessa; daughters, Meranda Frost of Austin and Jennifer Frost of Odessa; son, Tommy Frost of Denton; mother, Wanda Ayco*ck of Midland; and father, Johnny Ayco*ck of Robert Lee.
