I'm a Former Surgeon General and I Couldn't Believe My $10k Medical Bill

In a recent tweetopens in a new tab or window that resonated with many, I shared my startling encounter with an unexpected medical bill of nearly $5,000 (originally $10,000). The incident shed light on a widespread issue that countless Americans face when grappling with the labyrinthine and often bewildering U.S. healthcare system

I have mentioned in a past post about the clusterf*ck healthcare system. A system that is responsible for a majority of bankruptcy. Where one has to make life and death decisions based on finance, that’s really messed up. If it happens to a former Sutgeon General, imagine the burden for ordinary people.

Why One Health System Stopped Suing Its Patients

Imagine having been served paper for a lawsuit for back payment, Your wages being garnished or a lien on your properties. Collectors showing up or calling about past due. For far too many, this is a reality.

Nationally, nearly half of adults are unable to cover a $500 medical bill without going into debt, a 2022 KFF pollopens in a new tab or window found. At the same time, the average annual deductible for a single worker with job-based coverage now tops $1,500opens in a new tab or window.

Maybe we should take this example and make it happen for everyone?

Say What? North Carolina Lawmakers Vote to Bring Back Mask Ban, with an Exception for the Ku Klux Klan

The North Carolina senate gave preliminary approval to a bill that would make it illegal again to wear a mask in public, but Democratic state Sen. Sydney Batch blasted the measure, claiming it protected the ability of hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan to cloak their faces during public events, but not people with health issues like herself.

What is it with mask (with notable excemption) that triggers some folks?

Doctors rail against proposed ban against public masking

The former surgeon general in the Trump administration criticizes N.C. bill that would do away with a pandemic-era law that allowed face masks for public health reasons.

More of the pathetic, silly, absurd, co*ckeyed, derisory, idiotic, laughable, ludicrous, nonsensical, preposterous, farcical and ridiculous bullsh*t. As Shakespeare would put it, “Thou leathern-jerkin, crystal-button, knot-pated, agatering, puke-stocking, caddis-garter, smooth-tongue, Spanish pouch!”

I get an occasional e-mail from ConsumerLabs with information about supplements on the market. It shows that these supplements are clinically evaluated, so I get an gem once in a while. It does appear that ConsumerLabs have better evidence based evaluation. It also goes to show that, contrary to claims that supplements

GABA Work As a Supplement?

GABA for Sleep or Mood?

Medically reviewed and edited by Tod Cooperman, M.D.

Updated May 13, 2024 ⓘ Published January 26, 2023

Summary

  • What does GABA do and do supplements work?

  • GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a natural "inhibitory neurotransmitter," meaning it blocks impulses between the nerve cells, resulting in a calming effect. Many medications for insomnia, stress and anxiety, epilepsy, and other conditions work by affecting GABA activity. However, taking GABA as supplement does not significantly increase GABA levels in the brain and has not been shown to provide much benefit for epilepsy, insomnia or stress, or cognitive performance, and the effects, if any, are temporary. GABA also affects processes that control blood pressure and muscle mass, so it has been evaluated for hypertension and muscle building (see What It Does).

    • What dose of GABA is used?

In clinical trials, GABA has typically been taken at a dose of 100 to 800 mg per day, although higher and lower doses have been used (see Dosage).

CDC asks states and cities to keep flu surveillance at peak levels because of bird flu threat

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asked local and state health officials today to maintain flu surveillance operations at peak-season levels over the summer in a bid to remain watchful for any signs of human-to-human spread of the H5N1 bird flu virus.

In a call with state and local health authorities, Nirav Shah, CDC’s principal deputy director, said flu surveillance efforts should not be allowed to go into off-season mode this summer, given the need to detect human infections with H5N1, if they are occurring.

The outbreak, the first time H5N1 has been seen to transmit in dairy cattle, has been detected in 51 herds in nine states over the past two months. Scientists studying the phenomenon believe the virus

is much more widespread.

Not disagreeing here, already suspected this is more widespread. Normally the Influenza surveillance season decrease to a lower level but tracking is still important.
