William Purdy Jr.

William H. Purdy Jr. of Frazee, Minn., formerly of Glenside, died Aug. 21, 2008, at his home near Birchmere Resort on Little Toad Lake, surrounded by his family. He was 67.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, he was the husband of Beatrice Benson Super.

Mr. Purdy graduated from Northeast Missouri State University in 1964 and moved to Glenside for a number of years, where he raised three daughters with his first wife, Sandra Siefer Purdy. In 1991, he retired from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board and purchased Birchmere Family Resort and Campground in Frazee, Minn., which he ran with his second wife, Beatrice, until their retirement in 2005. He continued living near Little Toad Lake until his death.

Mr. Purdy was a bird watcher, lover of nature and an environmental activist. As a member of the Little Toad Lake Association, he worked at preserving lake water quality. His work expanded to a regional and state level as Mr. Purdy was involved with the MPCA, COLA, SWCD, DNR and Clean Water Action. He also valued tourism and the resort industry in the State of Minnesota, working with state and local government to preserve the industry. Mr. Purdy was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Detroit Lakes and was a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He traveled the United States extensively with his wife.

In addition to his wife and ex-wife, he is survived by his three daughters, Stephanie King of Berwick, Pa., Patricia Wallace of Austin, Texas, and Elizabeth Hanson of Berwick, Pa.; a stepson, Christopher Super of Pottstown, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Adrienne Smith of Stonewall, La.; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two sisters, Vicki Reinard and Joan Daughen, both of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Purdy was preceded in death by his parents.

A viewing was held on Aug 25 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, Minn. A funeral service with the Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating was held Aug. 26 at Lake Grove Lutheran Church, Waubun, Minn. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Red River Valley or to either of the churches he attended.

Theodore A. Kaminski

Theodore A. Kaminski of Huntington Valley died Aug. 20, 2008. He was 48.

He is survived by his parents, Dominic A. and Barbara B. Sgro; his grandmother, Marie Sgro; his brother, Mark R. Kaminski; his niece, Aubrey E. Sgro; and his aunts and uncles.

A memorial service was held Aug. 26 at John J. Bryers Funeral Home in Willow Grove. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery in Roslyn.

Donations may be made to Abington Hospital, LENFEST Medical ICU, 1200 Old York Road, Abington, PA 19001.

Mary R. Lybrand

Mary R. Lybrand, a lifelong resident of Roslyn, died Aug. 22, 2008, at Abington Memorial Hospital. She was 75.

She was the wife of the late William E.R. Lybrand Jr. for 54 years.

Born in Abington, she was the daughter of Antonia (Falcone) Marino and the late Paul Marino. Mrs. Lybrand graduated from Notre Dame High School in Jenkintown.

She worked as a stitcher at the Globe Ticket Co. in Warminster for 20 years. She enjoyed antiquing, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her children, Sharon Aaron, William E.R. Lybrand III, Cindy Rossi, Steven Lybrand, Debra Lybrand and James Lybrand; seven grandchildren; a brother, Paul Marino; and two sisters, Catherine Walker and Anne Marino.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 28 at Baron Rowland Funeral Home, 1059 Old York Road, Abington. Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn.

Elaine Day Kroll

Elaine Day Kroll of Lancaster, formerly of Glenside, died April 8, 2008.

Mrs. Kroll was the wife of the late Raymond F. Kroll Jr.

She is survived by her son, Douglas Kroll; a daughter, Diane Seeger; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Interment was private at West Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Catherine Cox

Catherine (McKeon) Cox of Mount Gretna, Pa., formerly of Jenkintown, died Aug. 24, 2008, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon, Pa. She was 65.

Born in Abington, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Anna Mulrooney McKeon.

A graduate of Jenkintown High School, Mrs. Cox earned her B.A. in education from St. Joseph College and then went on to earn a Master of Science from Villanova University.

She was employed for 30 years with the Philadelphia School District.

She is survived by her husband, Allan S. Cox; her children, Christopher, Kevin and Stefanie; and siblings Francis J. and Geraldine Varallo. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas J. McKeon.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 602 West Ave., Jenkintown, where the family will greet relatives and friends at 9 a.m.

Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1626 Locust St., Philadelphia, PA 19103.

Florence B. Miller

Florence B. Miller, a longtime resident of Abington, died Aug. 19, 2008, at Wyncote Church Home. She was 81.

Born in Philadelphia to the late Walter and Florence Boothroyd, she was the wife of the late Robert C. Miller for 54 years.

A 1945 graduate of Olney High, she worked as a secretary for the accounting firm of Haskin & Sells.

Mrs. Miller was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where she taught a Sunday school class for 35 years.

She is survived by three sons, Robert of Abington, Richard of Dallas, Texas, and David of Salt Lake City, Utah: six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Aug. 27 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Parkview and Lycoming avenues, Abington, PA 19001. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn.

Memorial contributions may be made to the above named church.

William Robinson Sr.

William R. Robinson Sr. of Warminster, formerly of Maple Glen, died Aug. 21, 2008, three days after his 71st birthday, in Renaissance Gardens at Ann’s Choice.

Mr. Robinson was the son of the late Kelso J. Sr. and Elsie M. (Graul) Robinson and the husband for 50 years of Margaret A. Robinson.

Mr. Robinson was a graduate of Abington Senior High School, Class of 1955, and lettered all three years for the rifle team. He graduated from Drexel College of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1964 and went on to obtain his professional engineer’s license in 1980.

He worked for York Division Borg Warner Corp. for 20 years, and then took a position with Delaware Valley York, where he rose to be vice president of construction and energy dynamics. He completed his career with York International Corp., in January 2000.

Mr. Robinson was a lifetime member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers and served in various board positions. He also taught an HVAC course at Penn State related to the field of mechanical engineering and project management.

Mr. Robinson was a member of Carmel Presbyterian Church, where he served in the ushers association and later served as a ruling elder. He was a member of the W.K. Bray Lodge No. 410 F& A.M. in Hatboro, the Lulu Shrine of Plymouth Meeting and the Scottish Rite Masons of the Valley of Allentown.

He enjoyed softball for 50 years in which he played for several teams per season. He also enjoyed golf.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, William R. Robinson Jr. of Warrington; two daughters, Anne P. Cowan of Chalfont and Carolyn D. Rule of North Hills; seven grandchildren; and his brother, Kelso J. Robinson of St. Cloud, Fla.

Funeral and Masonic services were held Aug. 25 at Carmel Presbyterian Church, Glenside. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn.

Ruth Eddowes

Ruth (Campbell) Eddowes of Abington died Aug. 21, 2008, at Rydal Park, Jenkintown. She was 90.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Robert A. and Bertha (Gettel) Campbell. She was the wife of the late Walter D. Eddowes Jr.

Mrs. Eddowes was a graduate of Cheltenham High School and attended Drexel University.

A talented seamstress, she did tailoring for Mendelsohn Dress Shop and private clients for many years.

She was a member of Carmel Presbyterian Church, Glenside, where she sang in the choir and participated in numerous other activities for many years.

Mrs. Eddowes volunteered at Abington Memorial Hospital for nearly 20 years.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne A. of Winder, Ga., and Robert C. of Arnold, Md.; a daughter, Constance R. Shade of Cape Coral, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Walter David Eddowes III; and two brothers, Robert G. and John S. Campbell.

A memorial service was held Aug. 25 at Carmel Presbyterian Church, 100 Edgehill Road, Glenside, PA 19038. Interment was private.
