SS Canberra was an ocean liner which later operated on cruises, in the P&O fleet from 1961 to 1997. She entered service in May 1961, and made her maiden voyage starting in June. Canberra was withdrawn from P&O service in September 1997 and sold for scrapping, leaving for Pakistan the next month. Totally unused and obviously no longer made, this is a very rare label that fully deserves to be with a P&O / Label / Nauticalia / Canberra collector. This is the second I had ( 1st has already gone ) but it too must go. See photos for detail and condition - colours are strong and no damage or blemishes. Backing still attached and undisturbed Measures 10cms by 8 cms. Would happily keep but I'm under instruction to reduce my Nautical Collection so off it goes . Will be shipped protected and fully insured. SS Canberra was an ocean liner which later operated on cruises, in the P&O fleet from 1961 to 1997. She was built in Norther Ireland and was named on 17 March 1958, after the federal capital of Australia, Canberra being launched on 16 March 1960. She entered service in May 1961, and made her maiden voyage starting in June. In the 1982 Falklands War she served as a troop ship and nicknamed the Great White Whale. After the war and a lengthy refit, Canberra returned to civilian service as a cruise ship. Her role in the Falklands War made her very popular with the British public, and ticket sales after her return were elevated for many years as a result. Age and high running costs eventually caught up with her though, as she had much higher fuel consumption than most modern cruise ships. Canberra was withdrawn from P&O service in September 1997 and sold for scrapping, leaving for Pakistan the next month. A famous ship, massively loved by all who sailed on her she was in many ways the forerunner of modern ships – her lines ( 1961 remember ) so similar to current P&O ships
